Abstract:Background: The purpose of telling life stories is to arrange, give meaning and to express the identity. Although narratives are used as an instrument in mental health care, little has been known about the effects and possibilities to use them in psychiatry. Goal: This study will contribute in exploring the possibilities of using narratives in psychiatry. By means of a few cases, analyses and possibilities will be examined. Method: Five clients from De Wieke, a clinical setting of people with personality disorder, who were in the last phase of the treatment, were asked to write their narratives again. This story was compared with the story that was written in the application phase. Both stories were thematic coded and analysed. Both stories were also analysed by using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) software. Results: Analyses of the narratives shows a recognition of the mental problems or some details of it. The results shows also the progress regarding the mental state. This applies for thematical coding as well as for the analysis of the LIWC software. Conclusion: Narratives offer the opportunity to use in psychiatry as a measuring device. It also gives clients the opportunity to rewrite there life stories as the treatment continues and the insight grows. The results found, shows great expectation to explore this device in psychiatry.
