Abstract:	Fewer older people choose to live in a nursing home. This is largely due to the poor image of the nursing homes. An important reason is that, within the nursing home there is insufficient connection to the wishes and needs of the elderly. It appears that de contact between caregivers and residents plays an important role in identifying and fulfilling those needs and as a result may lead to higher levels of mental wellbeing. However it is unclear how the needs of the elderly are met through communication. The mental health of an individual can be stimulated in several ways. One of those ways to stimulate mental health is through stimulating the psychological wellbeing. The psychological wellbeing can be stimulated by fulfilling the three basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence and relatedness. This study attempted to answer the question how communication aspect, which do fulfill the need for relatedness, are used in health care so that residents of nursing homes can fulfill their need for relatedness and can achieve a higher level of wellbeing. Through a literature study and conversation analysis the video fragments of the morning care have been analyzed. Results show that concerning the fulfillment of the basic need relatedness, the caregiver can use various communication aspects to help the resident of a nursing home fulfill his or her need for relatedness. It appears that when the caregiver and the resident talk about subjects that are important for the resident, the fulfilling of relatedness is stimulated. In this case is doesn’t have to be that the caregiver always ask about important topics, also discussing questions and comments that the residents bring up, can be an reason to talk about import topics. For example, the caregiver took of the clothes that the resident had on and doing that, she came in contact with the catheter of the resident. In response to that the resident asked the caregiver if everything was all wright with the catheter because she had some doubts about that. It also seems that talking about this and that’s can stimulate the feeling of relatedness. For example: talking about a Christmas tree or soccer. It looked like talking about those things led to a feeling of participating in common activities. Finally, the use of humor can also lead to a feeling of relatedness. For example, laughing together about things can stimulate feelings of interest and warmth by the resident. These feelings lead to a feeling of relatedness. Striking with respect to the results is that not only the caregiver can stimulate the feeling of relatedness, also the resident can participate in activities that stimulate the feeling of relatedness. Residents can bring up their own important topics, talk about this an that’s and can use humor to stimulate their feeling of relatedness. For further research there are some recommendations; generate a larger group of respondents, do not only use video fragments of the morning care, do not focus on one basic need but on all three basic needs. By doing this the results that will be generated will be much more generalizable. Also it is import to develop checklists and use questionnaires to measure the extent to which the resident finds that the communication has been fulfilling. Recommendations regarding the daily practice are using a video-interaction guidance and training of the caregivers in fulfilling the basic needs.
