| Abstract: | Background- The experience women have with natal care, and their level of contentment with this care has been the subject of a lot of research all over the world. However, this research is based on the experiences women have with natal care and not on their wishes and preferences. Furthermore, these studies mostly consist of questionnaires, so women can only express their opinion about the subjects that were a part of the questionnaires. In this research, a qualitative testing method has been used to discover the wishes and preferences of women who just gave birth, both in primary and secondary health care. The results can be used to adjust the care to what clients think is important to natal care. Methods- As a qualitative testing method, group interviews were used. The researcher did not control or intervene in the interviews. Clients were asked to write down what they thought was most important to them before, during and after childbirth. These issues were then discussed in the group interviews, distinguishing the women receiving primary and secondary health care. Based on the inductive analysis a list of important health care aspects was created where the quotes of clients could be stratified in categories and subcategories. Results- The following subjects came about and were discussed in hierarchal order: „treatment‟, „participants and decision-making‟, „information‟, „organisations of the hospital‟, „continuity‟, „role of the partner‟, „expertise‟ and „aftercare‟. Clients point out that it is important to them to have a personal connection to the concerning caretakers, something which is only possible if the continuity of care takers is guaranteed. Clients want to be involved in the decision making process and have in say in the matter. They also want to discuss the several options they have during labour on forehand. It is desirable that clients are provided with information about procedures and consequences of these options before they go into labour. Clients also prefer to be kept up to date about what is happening during labour and they would like to receive practical information about their pregnancy and childbirth. Clients prefer to be able to call or visit whenever they have questions. Caretakers are expected to be experts and should be able to answer any question. In addition to this, clients want their partners to be more involved in the pregnancy and the delivery. Clients would prefer for their partners to spend the night in the hospital after the baby is born, and that the new family would have single room at their disposal. Considering the after care, clients point out that they would like to be stitched right after the delivery and do not want to wait for this very long. Clients in primary health care have other wishes than clients in secondary health care. This differs between categories, but in general, clients from secondary health are more concerned with having a smooth and safe delivery, whilst clients from the primary health care group are mostly concerned with having an agreeable delivery. Conclusion- Besides the already known aspects from literature like: giving information, wanting participation, the importance of continuity and getting personal attention, clients brought up some new aspects they think need more attention than before like: the role of the partner, information about breastfeeding, coaching during labour and taking the client seriously. A difference between the wishes and preferences of primary and secondary health care clients is that clients receiving primary health care are more concerned with having an agreeable pregnancy and delivery, whilst clients receiving secondary health care are mostly concerned with the aspects making sure their pregnancy and delivery go as smoothly and safely as possible |
