Abstract:This study investigated whether the skill of systematic experimentation can be increased through an intervention in the process of research question formulation. Fifty-seven seven and eight-graders engaged in a simulation-based inquiry task were asked to discover the effects of four different variables on the reverberation time of a gong. The pupils were randomly allocated to one of three groups; One group had to formulate a research question themselves, before starting their experimentation. The other two groups received a question from the experimenter. Here a distinction was made between one broad question, targeted at all four variables at once, and a series of four specific questions that addressed these variables one at a time. Results showed no differences in the degree of systematic experimentation between the groups that received the specific research questions and the group that received the broad question. Most of the participants who had to formulate their own research question, posed a specific question that involved just one of the four variables. From these findings it can be concluded that the type of research question used during experimentation does not influence the performance of systematic experimentation. Even though children are capable of formulating a research question themselves, support is needed to ensure that they investigate all possible aspects of an object or phenomenon
