Abstract:Background: This qualitative research has focused on people who were in treatment for a depressive disorder at a mental health care center in the Netherlands called Dimence. They have got internet-based treatment with written feedback and face-to-face evaluation moments. Having a depression has a lot of consequences and a lot of people are using treatment facilities for depression. The internet may offer a good alternative for reaching more people at the same time. It may reduce waiting-lists and save therapist time. In previous research there has been found high rates of drop-out in internet based interventions for depression. There has been little qualitative research about this subject. Especially about the treatments that have internet based interventions with support. Aims of the study are to gain more knowledge about patient experience with the treatment and to find what motivates them and what not. Method: Qualitative data were collected through semi structured interviews with 6 patients. Interviewees were selected from a list of people who had recently or in the previous year stopped treatment for depression or anxiety and had followed a first internet based module called ‘awareness’ or in Dutch ‘bewustwording’. We have collected data from both persons with a depressive disorder and an anxiety disorder in aim to compare these disorders. There have been personal interviews and interviews by telephone. An inductive, content analysis of the interviews was performed. The main themes were then compared with themes found in previous research. Results: Half of the persons were positive, half of the persons were negative about the internet treatment. The most important reason for people to go on with the internet based treatment after the first module were that they could do it in their own time and place. Some people liked it better to write then to talk about their symptoms and they had fewer problems with communicating mainly through the computer. Persons who did stop after the first module found a lack of identification with the assignments, the complaints were less so the treatment was not necessary anymore or people experienced the small amount of personal contact a great barrier towards the treatment. The main themes that are found that include motivators and barriers towards the treatment are: time and location, personal contact, motivation, navigation and design, way of communicating and lack of identification. Conclusion: There are a lot of factors that play a role if we want to know why people are motivated or not for internet based treatment with support. The program should be more adjusted to the situation of the patient, navigation should be easier. It seems that people with an anxiety disorder experience more benefit from the program. Maybe this is due to the symptoms of a depression which cause difficulty to concentrate and lack of motivation. More research should be done at this subject, the role of the social environment and the differences of treatment effects with regular treatment.
