Abstract:Research shows that life-review has a positive effect on depressive symptoms in elderly. The effect of life review has never been investigated from the perspective of the participant. This study examines, from the perspective of the participant, wether there are differences in what participants percieve to be meaningfull between participants by whom symptom reduction occurs and participants by whom no symptom reduction occurs. Participants with depressive symptoms took part in a life review intervention. In groups of four to six people they followed eight sessions of two hours. Semi-structured interviews were taken amongst twenty participants. Fragments from these interviews were analyzed with the use of a coding list. Analysis showed coping, acceptance, bereavement and openness as most meaningfull themes. Themes that were present in the group with symtom reduction were compared with themes that were present in the group without symptom reduction. Mostly similarities were found, but also interesting differences were found though. These differences were found regadering coping and acceptation. It is concluded that the intervention is more meaningfull for participants with symptom reduction. The intervention was more meaningfull to them regadering coping, acceptation of the past and developing alternative stories; elements of instrumental and integrative reminiscence and elementens of narrative therapie.
