Abstract:In total, 165 people participated in the survey and completed the online questionnaire. The study focused on three factors that may influence the attitude of citizens towards the police. The three factors that were central in this research are: The amount of crime-related television consumption, the assessment of the citizen of the last contact with the police and the influence of the social environment (friends and family) on the attitude towards the police. Furthermore, we looked for possible moderating effects that personality traits may have on the earlier discussed relations. The personality traits that are used in this research are: the sensitivity for authority, the need for consistency and the need for social proof. The three personality traits are each paired with one of the three factors of influence. The relationship between the attitude towards the police and the overall sense of security of the citizen, the willingness to share important information with the police, the extent to which the citizen see the police as an authority and the extent to which the public sees the police as an interesting employer will be researched in an explorative manner. The results show that there is no relationship between the amount of crime related television consumption and attitude towards the police. The citizens assessment of the last contact with the police shows a strong significant positive relationship with the citizens attitude towards the police. The need for consistency has a moderating effect on the relationship between the citizens assessment of the last contact and the general attitude toward the police. However, the observed moderating effect is the opposite than expected. A high need for consistency weakens the relation between the assessment of the last contact and the attitude towards the police. A low need for consistency strengthens the relation between the assessment of the last contact and the attitude towards the police. There is also a significant positive relation between the attitude of the direct social environment of the respondent and the attitude towards the police. The need for social proof has no moderating effect on the relation. The explorative study shows that an significant relation exists between the attitude towards the police and the overall sense of security of the citizen, the willingness to share important information with the police, the extent to which the citizen see the police as an authority and the extent to which the citizen sees the police as an attractive employer.
