Abstract:Aims: Cancer is a frequently occurring illness which drastically changes the lives of patients. The consequences of these changes extend beyond the patients themselves and affect their whole family. It is understood that predominantly adolescents between 13 and 21 have an increased risk of developing psychological problems as a result of their parent’s condition. The adolescents are in the process of detaching themselves from the family unit and developing their own identity. This process is disturbed by the parent’s illness and the consequential changes in family life. Additionally, the adolescents are in a stage of development where they begin to recognize the gravity of the situation and understand the serious concerns of their parents. Until now, little is known about how this focus group is drawn into these interventions. For these reasons, the aims of this article are to categorize and analyze interventions and their effectiveness on adolescents with a parent suffering from cancer. Both the existing literature and the daily practice were consulted as a source. Method: A systematic review was conducted covering both literature and practice. Three electronic databases were used for the literature search: Scopus, Web of Science and Psychinfo. Secondly, an inventory was constructed by telephone communication with academic hospitals which was expanded using the “snowball method”. In total, 82 institutes were contacted including 8 academic hospitals, 25 were “inloophuizen”, 9 therapeutic centres, one hospital and one non profit organization in Nederland, 36 academic hospitals and two non profit organisations in Germany. As part of both the review and the construction of the inventory, the interventions were assessed based on their effectiveness, content and focus group. Results: In the systematic review 13 interventions were found. The psychological methods used in these were peer-support, psycho-education, communication in a group as well as open communication within the families and an expansion of coping abilities. Only two studies were devoted to the effectiveness of the interventions. In the inventory 29 institutes were found with a program for adolescents with a parent suffering from cancer; these programs range from clinical interventions, creative methods or exercise to interventions in schools or online. The clinical practice is dominated by interventions centered on contact with individuals with similar experiences. Studies of the effects are also lacking in this category Conclusion: Although few interventions for this focus group were available in the literature, there is an adequate selection in the practice, especially in “inloophuizen”. Future work should initially be focused on the effects of existing interventions in order to quantify their effectiveness with respect to this focus group. Following this study, the content of the interventions should be reviewed. Although contact with fellow sufferers is often utilized in the practice, the literature emphasizes the meaning of the whole family during the therapeutic process. Finally, resulting interventions could target adolescents within the focus group specifically. The existing interventions were found to have a broad age focus which may not sufficiently cover the needs of adolescents.
