Abstract:The virus HIV/AIDS is one of the major causes of death in Uganda. In spite of the large amount of strategies for HIV/AIDS-prevention, the number of people who are affected by HIV/AIDS is rising. Young people belong to the biggest risk group in Uganda. Thus there is a great need for effective prevention programs at school. This research examines the effects of the American prevention program ´Be Proud! Be Responsible!´ on young people in Uganda. Foundation to this program is a psychological model, which predicts the willingness of youth to abstain from sex or to use condoms. Goal of the program is to delay initiation of sexual activities among inexperienced teenager and to increase condom use among sexually experienced teenager. Main characteristic of ´Be Proud! Be Responsible!´ is the social approach of using games and open group discussions. The research includes an intervention group (n = 159) and a control group (n = 102), in which both groups had to fill in a pre- and posttest in form of a questionnaire. The teenager had to answer questions about their perceived vulnerability to an HIV infection, their knowledge about HIV/AIDS, their motivation to learn about HIV/AIDS and their social cognitions regarding abstinence and condom use. The intervention group participated in the one day education program for five hours. The teenager of the control group filled in the questionnaire before and after their regular school lessons, without joining any intervention. After the education program the teenager of the intervention group showed, in comparison to the control group, significantly higher scores on perceived vulnerability to an HIV infection, knowledge about HIV/AIDS, social cognitions regarding abstinence, self-efficacy to use condoms and subjective norm to use condom. Hence, ´Be Proud! Be Responsible!´ had strong influence especially on social cognitions regarding abstinence. The strongest determinant to promote the intention regarding abstinence was a positive attitude towards abstinence. Subjective norm regarding abstinence increased because of the intervention with 59.8%. In this way inter personal communication turned out to be very important for young people in Uganda. The intention to use a condom was reduced by the intervention, probably as a result of the rising intention towards abstinence. Subjective norm regarding condom use and the motivation to learn about HIV/AIDS had direct influence on the decreased intention to use a condom. The results indicate that the psychological model can be used in Uganda to predict safe sexual behavior and to develop HIV/AIDS-prevention programs. Furthermore this study showed
