Abstract:In this study, research is done to examine the relationship between proactive resources and work engagement. We divide proactive resources into proactive work environment (consist of job autonomy and social support) and proactive personality. We expect a relation between proactive resources and work engagement according to the JD-R model, and expect this relation to be mediated by positive self-efficacy (RBSE). Also we assume a buffering effect of proactive resources at the negative influence of job demands on work engagement. The research is focused on high school teachers in the Netherlands. Results provided support for a positive relation between proactive resources and work engagement, in some cases mediated by RBSE. It is also proved that job demands have a negative relation with work engagement, but there’s no evidence for a buffering effect of proactive resources in this relation. Further research should focus on the relation of other proactive resources with work engagement and the effects within a longitudinal study
