Abstract:Positive mental health, well-being, meaningfulness and spirituality are themes that have, in this times, a growing interest. Within the addictioncare the attention for meaningfulness and spirituality also increases. The aim of this study was the identification of well-being, meaning and spirituality in people with an addiction, who are in treatment at Tactus (Setting for Addiction Care). There was also emphasis on philosophy of life and religion and it was examined to what extent the theme meaning may be important within the treatment services of Tactus. The research was accomplished through a questionnaire that was completed by 130 respondents. The results of the research show that people with an addiction experience less well-being and less meaning in life than people without an addiction. It turns out that, as addiction problems are bigger, there is less well-being and less meaning in life. The degree of well-being and the degree of meaning are also related. It is striking that, in addition to the degree of well-being and the degree of desire for the main addiction, being married is a predictor of experiencing more meaning in addicted people. More than a third part of the respondents, indicated that the addiction has to do with the perception of meaning. 81.5% of the respondents endorsed the importance of the theme meaningfulness in treatment services of Tactus and almost half of the respondents indicates that meaning is not yet sufficiently addressed within the treatment services of Tactus. The research shows that spirituality is associated with certain aspects of addiction, well-being and meaning. It is not proven that having a certain philosophical belief or religion, can be associated with addiction, well-being and meaning. However, more than half of the respondents report to have support on their philosophical beliefs. It can therefore be said that well-being, meaning, spirituality and philosophy of life are important themes within the addiction care. Meaningfulness and spirituality can contribute to a better well-being. In the treatment of addicted people, it is therefore important that the theme meaning is well embedded and it will have an added value to offer possibilities to follow modules that include meaning, spirituality and philosophy of life.
