Abstract:Background: For this study a preventive self-help course „Op verhaal komen‟, was developed, based on integrative reminiscence and life-review. This study describes the course‟s impact on three elements: Narrative Foreclosure, Growth Motivation and Rumination. Methods: Inclusion criteria were: > 40 years and minimal – moderate depression. Participants (N = 174) were randomly divided into three parallel conditions; the experimental condition (N = 58), the control condition where the participants received a minimal intervention (N = 58) and the waiting list condition (N = 58). Two measurements were carried out: pre-treatment (T0) and post-treatment, three months after the start of the course (T1). During the measurements three tests were administered, the Narrative Foreclosure, the Growth Motivation Index and the Ruminative Response Scale. Participant data was removed when tests were not completed (N = 26). Regression analysis was used to determine whether scores in experimental conditions after the course, significantly differed from minimal intervention and/or the waiting list-group. Results: No significant differences were found between the experimental condition and the minimal intervention and/or the waiting list group on Narrative Foreclosure, Growth Motivation and Rumination. Conclusion: The preventive self-help course „Op verhaal komen‟ did not have a significant effect on Narrative Foreclosure, Growth Motivation and Rumination. After the course the elements show no improvements. However, the study also shows that the course has no disadvantageous impact on the three elements.
