Abstract:Over the last couple of years the alcohol consumption among young people has increased in the Netherlands. This causes al lot of social problems but more important, it causes health issues. A lot of programs were developed to stop the alcohol consumption by minors. But these programs do not seem to have much result. Because of this the Tactus Verslavingszorg started the brand new program Smartconnection. This project is not created to discourage the drinking of large amounts of alcohol in groups/company, but instead focuses on enjoying the drinking and not overdoing it. One of the ways to accomplish this is by using peer-education. It is used to see what kind of skills a peer educator in Smartconnection must possess according to young people. This is examined with a topic-interview. 32 young people (potential peer educators) from the HBO Windesheim in Zwolle took part in this research. The opinions of these people were linked to the previous results from other literature. The main focus was on the difference between peer educators in events and peer educators in private peer group drinking locations, because Smartconnection focuses on both situations. The conclusion is that a ‘good’ peer educator is completely dependent on the young person who needs the influence. But there are some very important skills a good peer educator needs. He or she has to be spontaneous, enthusiastic, friendly, in control of the Dutch language, social, tidy, of high status and being able to adapt to the culture of the group. The young people think that a peer educator in private peer group drinking locations should have some experience him/herself with huts and shelters. Though the main focus lies on the qualities a peer educator must possess, there has also been paid some attention on how to bring in new peer educators. The majority of the young people were enthusiastic about the peer educators though they would never want to be one themselves because they think they would not set the right example. Because of this they think it is not possible to make the message credible. Reduction of the preconceptions about peer educators could stimulate the recruiting of new ones. However, more research is recommended.
