Abstract:Studies made in the past made clear that the use of alcohol and drugs from people with a mental retardation is turning into a growing problem (Thijs, van der Nagel & Kiewik, 2008). The study described in this paper took place in the framework of the SumID-project which tries to make an inventory of the severity of substance-use and its reasons in the target group. It is known from several studies that personality, depression, substance use, intention of use and some background variables are connected for people with normal intelligence. This study aims to describe the relation of these variables at the target group consisting of people with a mental retardation. Four measurement instruments were used. The SumID-CR and SumID-Q, two questionnaires from the SumID-project, were used to assess substance use and background variables. Those two questionnaires contained questions about alcohol-, cannabis-, cocaine- and tobacco-use. Additionally the Signaallijst Depressie voor Zwakzinnigen (SDZ) and an intention-questionnaire that was made especially for the study were used. The questionnaire Substance Use Risk Profile Scale (SURPS) was used to assess personality dimensions that are known to be related to the use of alcohol and drugs. All used measurement instruments are adapted to the special needs of the target group in speech and grammar. In total, 18 persons and their supervisors were questioned. The SumID-Q, SURPS and the intention-questionnaire were interviews between the target person and the researcher, the SumID-CR and the SDZ were filled in by the supervisors. All data were analysed with correlation analyses and non-parametric tests. It can be stated that substance use and the intention of use are related. Used and planned amount of substances are the same. Furthermore, it was found that smokers had lower scores in the depression questionnaire than non-smokers. However, no relation was found between the SURPS- and the SDZ-scores. Nevertheless there was a relation between selected SDZ-items and SURPS-scores. The two personality dimensions Angstgevoeligheid and Sensation Seeking were correlated with two SDZ-items. Additionally it seems that cigarette- and alcohol use only depends on the SURPS-subscales Angstgevoeligheid and Impulsiviteit. A small number of background variables are related to the SDZ-scores. It was not possible to associate the SURPS-subscale scores with substance use, intention of use and the SDZ-scores. It was also not possible to involve cannabis- and cocaine use of the target group in the analysis, because there was not enough data on the use of these drugs.
