Abstract:The way a person adapts to the constraints arising from a chronic illness, affects his or her welfare. Adaptation, to the constraints caused by rheumatic diseases, can be determined by positive and negative indicators of adjustment. Earlier research that has been done regarding to the adaptation to chronic diseases, has shown that goal-related coping plays an important role in the development of emotional problems after a stressful, medical event. This current study has examined the relationship between the indicators of adjustment and goal management strategies in people with a chronic rheumatic disease. The goal management strategies consisted of goal pursuit, goal adjustment, goal disengagement and goal reengagement. Anxiety and depression were among the negative indicators of adjustment and the positive indicators of adjustment included experiencing a purpose in life, participation and positive affect. It was found that the indicators of adjustment were particular related to goal adjustment. There is a predictive connection that when people adjust to goals, experiencing the negative indicators adjustment will diminish and experiencing positive indicators of will increase. This study has shown that adjusting goals seems to be the most effective goal management strategy in adapting to the chronic rheumatic disease. The findings seems to indicate that adjusting goals has the strongest correlation with experiencing a decrease in negative indicators and an increase in positive indicators of adaptation. But it also showed that goal pursuit is closely related with the negative and positive indicators of adaptation. This can be concluded that both the goals of adjustment, as the continued pursuit of goals, are effective in successfully in adapting to the chronic rheumatic disease.
