Abstract:The present study examined possible associations between personality characteristics, cognitions (consisting of behavioral beliefs, risk perception and perceived behavioral control), substance use (tobacco, alcohol, hard drugs and soft drugs) and the consumption of energy drinks. A cross-sectional survey was conducted. A convenience sample including 101 participants was used for the study. All participants needed to fill in the same onlinequestionnaire. This questionnaire was formed by statements about expectations considering the risks of energy drink consumption, perceived likelihood, susceptibility and severity in the context of risks of energy drink consumption, perceived behavioral control, personality traits (extraversion and conscientiousness) and questions about substance use respectively. Most of the variables showed moderate to good levels of internal consistency, except some items on the behavioral beliefs scale and the risk perception scale. These items were analyzed separately. The findings indicated that the achievement and sociability aspects on the behavioral beliefs scale did correlate positively significant with energy drink consumption. There was also a significantly negative correlation between behavioral beliefs about taste, body unrest, lesions on the teeth and the consumption of energy drinks. Perceived behavioral control was also a strong predictor for energy drink consumption. Against expectations, extraversion did not correlate positively significant with energy drink consumption. The same was true for the expected negatively significant correlation between conscientiousness and energy drink consumption. Finally, tobacco use and the use of soft drugs were both significant predictors for the consumption of energy drinks. As a whole, the findings indicate that the respondents consume energy drinks from a functional perspective. It seems that the achievement of goals is a strong motive for the consumption of energy drinks.
