Abstract:This report shows how this bachelor assignment is executed and how certain design steps have lead to the final result. This bachelor assignment, the graduation assignment for the Bachelor of Industrial Design, was launched in May 2009. The goal of this assignment is to apply the gained knowledge independently. The assignment is to develop a step lift, the so called “Tredelift” in Dutch. A step lift is a new kind of mechanized stairs for people who find it difficult to climb the stairs. Attention is hereby mainly drawn to the special mechanism to move the steps. This mechanism will be placed into a special designed column and possibly even a railing. The research is important to make good and informed decisions during the design process. During this analysis phase, a program of requirements, a Failure Mode and Effect Analysis and a State Transition Diagram has been made. There has been made an analysis about all types of stairs and there are scenarios written which shows clearly what kind of things can happen on the stairs. Prior to this bachelor assignment, there turned out to be a threatening patent. This has to be taken into account. Eventually, this could be avoided and there is even registered a new patent for this product. During the development of concepts, there are many solutions devised to overcome certain problems that had to be to solve. The concepts were regularly, in consideration with the company Demcon, reviewed and their feedback was used in the further developed of the product. The product is eventually provided with a motor and a screw spindle, which allows the step to move. The bottom of the product is adjusted to make sure that the product does fit on practically every stairs. This is important to maximize market account. Furthermore lighting is also incorporated in the product and there has been made a lot of calculations on forces and speeds. The final product should be smart: it must detect when the user is standing stable and when something is starting to get wedged between the steps. A student of electrical engineering helped us to realize al the electronics of the product. The final product has eventually become a column. The installation will be performed by a professional installer. To install the product, the products need to be mounted at both ends of every step on the stairs. After that a custom made step needs to be places between the products. The products need to be connected to each other. How the products eventually will communicate with each other will be developed immediately after this bachelor assignment.
