Abstract:This paper describes a research into the value of the semi-structured interview on the one hand and the task demonstration on the other hand by the elicitation of user needs during the process of information-seeking, for a labor market information website. Municipality of Enschede, the client, wants to develop a website with labor market information which is useful and usable for educated alumni who are searching for a job. The two elicitation methods where led by the eight stages of the informationseeking process to gather user needs. De group of participants consisted of graduates and alumni for each method. In the interview, each individual participant was asked about the experience of that person with the search for employment information. In the demonstration task each participant was observed during a search task for employment information on the internet. During this observation the think-aloud method was used as well. The data revealed that both, the semi-structured interview as task demonstration, generated important user needs. However, the interview obtained the important user needs at other stages of the information-seeking process than the task demonstration did. It further appeared that the task demonstration gathered mostly specific user needs, while the interview primarily obtained evaluative and more general user needs. This study shows that a combination of the semi-structured interview and the task demonstration is needed to elicit a set of user needs, as complete as possible, throughout the information-seeking process, serving a website with labor market information.
