Abstract:Mental disorders like major depression and anxiety disorders are highly prevalent among the Dutch population. In the Netherlands, one in five persons suffer from a mental disorder. This causes a significant reduction in the quality of life of these people and it causes a high burden of disease to society (high economic costs due to the treatment of mental illness and loss of employment). During recent years, prevention of mental illness through the promotion of mental health has become increasingly important. This study examines the effects of a preventive self-help course based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy that is designed to promote mental health in people who suffer from mild depression and anxiety symptoms. Participants of the self-help course “Voluit Leven” were guided by e-mail contact. The possible influence of guidance intensity on the effects of the self-help course was investigated.
