Abstract:These days there is an increasing attention for the positive effects environment stimuli can have on patients in healthcare facilities. In these two studies we examined the influence of the atmosphere, a more or less home- like versus clinical decorated counselingroom trough home-like or clinical furniture and decorations, in the counselingroom on the selfdisclosure of the client. Also we measured the appraissal of the counselingroom, the prototypicality and the appraissal of the counselor. In study one we used the results of 122 participants. We used six pictures of different decorated counselingrooms. Each pariticipant filled out a questionnaire wich included one of those pictures. The intended selfdisclosure turned out to be the highest in the most home-like counselingroom. The two rooms with al the decorations were rated the most positive, regardless of the furniture that was used. No effects were found on the proffessionality of the room. The most home-like counselingroom was rated as the most protypicality. In studie 2 we further examined four counselingrooms. The 92 participants were sent an digital questionnaire wich included an simulated consult trough six video clips. In the counselingrooms with all the decorations the participant exposed more selfdisclosure on depth and quantity. There turned out to be no connection between these results en de intended- selfdisclosure. The counselingroom with the clinical furniture and all the decorations was rated the most positive on attractiveness en professionalism. In this room the counselor was rated also positive. As regards to the prototypicality, the rooms with the home-like furniture were considerd the most prototypical. We can concluded that the atmosphere in a counselingroom can influence the client. A home-like atmosphere is responsible for positive results regarding self-disclosure, attractiveness en professionalism of the room and the appraissal of the counselor. The decorations seems in particularly responsible for these results.
