Abstract:Each year, one of eight persons in The Netherlands suffer from anxiety disorder. Many more inhibitants suffer from feelings of anxiety that could lead to an anxiety disorder or loss of work. The costs for this problem are enormous, while the anxiety complaints themselves are often not being recognized as such. Research has shown that prevention of psychological complaints is (cost)effective. However, (indicated) preventive courses in The Netherlands hardly exist. In this study, a self-help preventive course for participants with modest anxiety complaints is evaluated. Participants received feedback from a counselor weekly, either over their experiences as much as they needed, or over their proces only. The course is based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness. ACT aims at the increase of psychological flexibility rather than focussing on the reduction or elimination of psychological complaints. The research questions on the self-help course ‘Voluit leven’ are whether (1) psychological flexibility improves, (2) anxiety complaints reduce and (3) there is a difference between the two experimental ACT-conditions.
