Abstract:Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) appears to be effective in treating patients with chronic pain. Patients obtain more psychological flexibility and higher levels of agency. What means that patients gain control over their own lives and become less dependent on their pain, thoughts en emotions. However, little is known about the precise mechanism of ACT. It is also unclear which factors influence this positive development in patients. Can we speak of an effect due to specific factors only or are non-specific factors also important? The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of ACT in the subgroup chronic pain patients in treatment at the Roessingh rehabilitation center, giving insight in the development of agency during the treatment process and describe the factors (specific and non specific) from the perception of the patient. A total of 8 patients where followed during the entire treatment. Weekly interviews were conducted to map the narrative of the therapy. Interviews were coded for agency to gain insight in the individual development of the patients. Data from the MPI, ACPT, PCS and PIPS are taken to underpin individual results. The mean result was that each patient develops differently. One patient show a gradually development, the other develops by trial and error. ACT appears to be overall effective in the subgroup of chronic pain patients who have undergone treatment in the Roessingh rehabilitation center. The level of agency improved significantly which means the lives of patients are less dedicated to the pain, patients are more in control over actions and patients are more in charge of their own lives. If we examine the factors that contribute to this positive development, we see that both specific and nonspecific factors are indicated by patients. However, more qualitative research is needed to broaden and generalize the results.
