Abstract:This qualitative study has been carried out among young male gamers. The aim of the present study was to analyze the motivation of playing online games and to find out potential risk factors for the development of excessive gaming behavior. Ten semi- structured interviews were conducted. The questionnaire covered such things as general playing behavior, motivation to play online games and problematic gaming behavior. Questions such as: "Which games are you playing?", "How much time do you spend playing online games?", "Which aspects do you like while playing online games?", "Why do you find it hard to stop playing an online game?" and "What features of the game keep you playing longer than you expected?" were asked. Especially, statements about playing motivations and problematic gaming were important for this study. The interview data were analyzed using a list of gathered codes and network analysis. The results showed that most of the respondents play online games because of the social aspect, the need for achievement and rewarding and because of the experience of fantastic stories. Motivations such as leisure, emotional coping and escape were less important. In addition, the results showed that a combination of the social aspect, the need for achievement and the fact that some online games are never- ending can be considered as potential high- risk factors for the development of excessive gaming behavior.
