Abstract:The oscillatory interaction between two free opposed turbulent round jets was studied experimentally in water using particle image velocimetry (PIV) and laser induced fluorescence (LIF). The research done is a complement to experiments carried out by Alkandry et al. at Syracuse University. Two 9 mm diameter nozzles, separated by 25 diameters, were placed in a transparent water tank. Two opposed jet configurations were investigated namely configurations at an angle of inclination of 0 and 10 degrees. The velocity profile at the nozzle exit was fully turbulent. The instantaneous velocity field of the resulting radial jets was highly unstable. The time scale of oscillation was identified as about 7 Hz in both the 0 and 10 degrees configuration. Also the mechanism of oscillation was interpreted. It is recommend performing concentration measurements in future research such that the mixing of two impinging turbulent round jets can be quantified.
