Abstract:There is still little known on doubts about kinship and the choice whether or not to conduct a paternity test. The purpose of this study is to gain more insight into this problem. We formulated the following main question: What impact have doubts about kinship in everyday life? And what factors play a role in the decision to conduct a paternity test when in doubt? We distinguish to groups of individuals, namely individuals who have questions about their own origin (children) and individuals who have questions about the origin of their child(ren) (fathers). To collect the data we used an online survey. In this survey we used questions that were specifically developed for this study. The survey was completed by a small group of respondents (n= 29). Within the group of respondents there are more children then fathers and only a minority of the respondents conducted a paternity test. It appears that doubts arise mainly due to the behavior of the mother and these doubts often exist longer than a year. It also appears that paternity tests are often taken to reassure the individuals own doubts of kinship. This study shows that doubts about kinship have little impact on daily life. Furthermore, it appears that there are multiple factors that influence the decision whether or not to conduct a paternity test. Hereby, one should think of age, the type of doubts a person may have, and the duration of the doubts.
