Abstract:Objective: To study the relation of cardiovascular and comorbide diseases, medication use, laboratory results with depression, in a large and clinically relevant sample of cardiovascular disease patients in a general hospital setting. Methods and Results: In total, 354 cardiovascular disease patients were included in the study and filled in the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to assess depressive symptoms. The mean age of the study sample was 69.51 years (SD= 10.76), 35.3% is female 64.7% male. 107 patients showed no indications for a depression (PHQ-9 score 0), 192 showed minimal to minor depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 score < 10) and 64 patients showed moderate to severe indications for a depression (PHQ-9 score ≥ 10). Depression score mean across all patients is 4.8 (SD.= 5.7). Patient dossiers were made available to assess diagnoses and analyze their relation to depression. We conclude that heart failure, angina pectoris, Diabetes Mellitus Type II, overweight, rheumatic conditions, renal insufficiency and chronic fatigue syndrome are all significantly and positively related to depression. Analyzing medication, benzodiazepines showed a strong relation to depression. Medication for Nerve Pains and Proton Pump Inhibitors are also related to depression. Statins are negatively related to depression. Having had a recent admission for heart failure in the cardiology and psychiatry department both show a strong relation to depression. Conclusion: A large number of variables could be identified that are related to depression, however further research is needed to examine the direction of this relation.
