Abstract:Objective: The objective of this study was to determine whether, and to what extend the Health Belief Model [HBM], different information types and participation with the national health check for cervical cancer influence maternal acceptation of the HPV vaccine. Method: By means of two versions of a digital questionnaire, which were distributed among mothers of daughters in the highest grades of primary education in Enschede and Hengelo (N=101), several hypotheses concerning the acceptation of the vaccine were tested. To test for the influence of different information types (cues to action), both questionnaires had two action cues, of which one differed in both conditions. These statistical analysis for the hypothesis were tested with Spearmans correlations, regression analysis and t-tests. Results and conclusion: Results show that the psychological factors of the HBM could account for over 50% of the variance in acceptation. Which means that those factors influence the greater part of the acceptation of the vaccine. The presented cues to action had no influence on the acceptation of the vaccine. In both conditions the action cues were regarded as equally reliable. The prior acceptance of the vaccine proved to be influential in the acceptance of the cues to action, in which mothers who were positive about the vaccine, preferred the positive cue to action over the negative one and the other way around. The final analysis were to determine if women who participate in the national health check for cervical cancer are more willing to accept the HPV vaccine. Results show that women who participate with the health check, were significantly more positive about the vaccine.
