Abstract:The goal of this master thesis is to gain more insight in certain interrogation strategies, which are used by detectives during suspect interrogations, and which can have a positive effect on the interrogation results. This research will specifically examine which influence the color of the interrogation environment has on this process. In order to investigate this, there has been an inquiry amongst students of the Twente University and additionally at the “Regionaal opleidingscentrum” (ROC) in Apeldoorn to measure in which degree the behavior of the detective (Active listening versus Rational persuasion) and the color (Blue versus White) of the interrogation room will contribute to finding the truth. The results show that active listening and rational persuasion have different effects on the number of suspects that made a confession. Considering the suspects estimation concerning the quality of the perceived relationship with the detective, none of the data showed that there was any difference between active listening and rational persuasion. It was expected that active listening would lead to a better quality of the perceived relationship with the detective than rational persuasion would. This could not be confirmed. Furthermore, it was expected that with use of rational persuasion, more suspects would confess compared to the active listening method. This wasn’t the case either. In contrary of the hypothesis the data show that the use of active listening leads to more confessions than when rational persuasion is used. Besides, the detective’s behavior has a direct influence on his (perceived) credibility. The suspects perceived the detective to be more reliable and a better expert when they were confronted with active listening as interrogation method in comparison to rational persuasion. The blue color of the interrogation environment appears to hardly have any influence on the relation between the detective’s behavior and the amount of confessions, or the estimated quality of the perceived relationship. One could draw the following conclusion from this investigation: The interrogation method “Active listening” has a positive influence on the number of suspects that will make a confession, and it improves the detectives perceived credibility as well. Some of the other hypotheses could not be confirmed or rejected with the data from this inquiry. There is more research needed before we can draw any further conclusions.
