Abstract:The objective of this study was to examine the construct validity of the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) in people with fibromyalgia. The FFMQ is a questionnaire that measures someone’s level of mindfulness. Mindfulness is a way of living and has its origin in Buddhism. It is described as focusing someone’s attention on the experience occurring at the present moment in a non-judgmental and accepting manner. Therapeutic interventions based on mindfulness, for example the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, are used in health care to help people cope with chronic pain and/or mental disorders. Fibromyalgia is a disease that is successfully treated with mindfulness based interventions. To evaluate whether an online training in mindfulness improves the level of mindfulness in people with fibromyalgia, it is important to have a valid and reliable questionnaire that measures mindfulness. The FFMQ is chosen as questionnaire. This questionnaire consists of five facets: observing, describing, acting with awareness, nonjudging and nonreactivity. Until now, in America and the Netherlands, the validity of the FFMQ has only been studied among students and meditators. In this current study research has been done into the different aspects of both the internal as well as the external construct validity of the FFMQ in people with fibromyalgia. This analysis turned out that the FFMQ in general shows a good internal and external validity. Concerning the internal construct validity, the factor analysis, internal consistency and intercorrelations, except for the factor observing, showed good results. Concerning the external construct validity the expected relations between the FFMQ and the other constructs were consistent with predictions. The next step was to compare the means of the people with and without meditation experience. The results were not consistent with predictions: there were no significant differences found between the scores of people with and without meditation experience. Finally the regression analyses showed that two factors of the FFMQ, describing and acting with awareness, were significant predictors of mental health.
