Abstract:This study examined the influence of alcohol-usage promoting and alcohol-usage discouraging communication on the prototype, a component of the prototype willingness model (PWM). Data was collected from 129 Dutch boys, aged between 12 and 18 years. Measures included the use of alcohol by respondents, their parents and peers, communication by parents and peers and the components of the prototype willingness model. Results showed that, surprisingly, discouraging communication had no influence on any component of the PWM, nor on actual use of alcohol. Alcohol use promoting communication did affect the prototype and the actual alcohol usage. The PWM was used successfully in predicting alcohol usage. In conclusion, the PWM can be used successfully for predicting alcohol use, and alcohol usage promoting communication has a significant influence on the youth’s drinking behaviour and prototype.
