Abstract:The aim of this study was to explore the differences in warning compliance behaviour and psychological determinants among drivers in two situations: being exposed to a warning while being alone or in a group. This study also examined which psychological determinants were related to compliance intention in a new situation and whether modeling and group processes took place. Hundred and eleven drivers, 65 individuals and 46 group members, participated in this field study by filling in a questionnaire. They were all exposed to the same stimulus, a digital warning system which showed an announcement about a gas leak. Thereby, they were instructed to avoid the straight on direction. Individuals were significantly more compliant compared to groups. No psychological determinants appear to be significant different between individuals and group members. Risk perception gives a strong explanation for compliance intention in a new situation for both individuals and group members. By individuals, controllability and support for the system also explain intention. By group members, believability is an important predictor. Modeling appeared to have taken place. Drivers who saw compliant others, were significant more compliant themselves. Group processes did not take place during the experiment, possibly as a result of the short time period between stimulus presentation and behavioural choice.
