Abstract:In this study a self-report questionnaire about person-job fit, job satisfaction and intention to quit was developed and administered to 72 mentally retarded adults. A questionnaire about job performance was administered to their supervisors. The work adjustment theory (Dawis & Lofquist, 1984) is used as a theoretical framework in this study. A strong negative effect of job satisfaction on intention to quit was found as expected. The effect of job satisfaction on tenure was nearly significant. Fit with difficulty of the job and with independence had a curvilinear effect on intention to quit. An overfit on variation led to a higher intention to leave. Needs-supplies fit as well as demands-abilities fit were not related to hypothesized outcomes (job satisfaction and job performance). Job performance was unrelated to tenure and intention to quit. Some unexpected correlations were found, like a negative relationship between job satisfaction and tenure and a negative curvilinear relationship between fit on independence and tenure. These relationships can be used as starting points for future research
