Abstract:Data collected in 2004 by Torka, Geurts, Sanders and Van Riemsdijk (under review) about 10066 employees of supermarkets and hypermarkets from Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic is used. This study examines to what extend personal characteristics (tenure, age, education and sex) and characteristics of their current job (job security, autonomy, task variety and challenge) explain employees’ perceived alternatives in the internal and external labour markets. It is also examined if employees’ perceived alternatives are predicted by characteristics of the local labour markets (unemployment, number of job seekers and number of vacancies). The results show that all hypothesized antecedents except job security affect the perceived alternatives in the internal or external labour market (or both). However, not all results conform to the hypotheses and certain variables appear to have moderating or mediating effects. Local labour market factors only appear to affect the perceived alternatives in the external labour market of Czech employees. Employees’ perceived alternatives in the internal labour market relate positively with their perceived alternatives in the external labour market
